Workshop: Seeing and Learning From Our Habits

Dr. Larry Peltz

We all have habits.  They are pervasive in our experience and allow us to organize our lives, seek  pleasure, avoid pain and even define ourselves.  Habits can range from wholesome, to seemingly benign to life threatening. But how do they really work for us? And why are they so resistant to change? Whether it is a habit of ingesting, behaving, thinking or relating, our actions have benefits and costs.  We might want to change our pattern because of its consequences or not because it has been and old friend that has given us comfort however fleeting or unwholesome.

The practice of meditation is the cultivation of presence, stillness and non-judgmental awareness.  As we investigate our experience and see more clearly we move toward greater insight, self compassion and skillful action.

In this workshop we will connect with our practice of sitting and walking as a foundation for looking more closely at our habits.  A model identifying 4 categories of experience—the pluses and minuses of maintaining vs. relinquishing a habit, will be presented. Through experiential exercises and discussion we will consider our habits more closely and provide tools for their ongoing exploration.

Larry Peltz is a psychiatrist who has worked in the field of addiction and dual diagnosis since 1985 and began practicing vipassana meditation in 1986.  He trained as a mindfulness teacher in the UMass Prison Project and for the past  30 years has integrated mindfulness approaches with his patients as well as teaching professionals and dharma students.  His book is  The Mindful Path to Addiction Recovery: a practical guide to regaining control over your life (Shambhala, 2013).
